Looking ahead: 2022 interior design trends

It’s no surprise that going into 2022, designers and DIYers are looking for colors that instill a sense of calm and optimism while also transforming a space. In a recent survey conducted by Sherwin- Williams, more than 400 residential and commercial designers shared their take on trending colors and themes we can expect as we step into a new year.* To explore the full survey results, reach out to  Sherwin-Williams@clynch.com.

And the top trending colors are…

When asked about trending colors for 2022, blue and green rose to the top. Specifically:

  • Green was a top choice among both residential and commercial designers with 38% of respondents predicting emerald green or sage green would be the most “on trend” in 2022.
  • Residential designers prefer emerald green, with 25% of the vote, while commercial designers are leaning into sage green, with 21% of the vote.
  • For blue hues, 12% of respondents predict navy blue will dominate 2022.

When asked about their own designs, 24% of designers believe they will be designing more with light neutrals in 2022, followed by 22% who indicated they’ll be designing more with greens and 21% who stated they’ll be using dark neutrals such as black and charcoal.

Seeking inspiration for design

When asked about the biggest inspiration for 2022 trends, 56% of designers stated well-being, followed closely by natural elements. Another big trend? 42% of designers said that sustainability and eco-design would be a big source of inspiration for them in the coming year.

When redesigning a space, homeowners are looking to convey a relaxed and peaceful mood, according to 53% of residential designers surveyed. This is compared to just 26% of commercial designers.

In commercial spaces, clients are prioritizing a welcoming and friendly feeling after a year spent at home according to 50% of commercial designers surveyed. That compares to just 29% of residential designers.
